I'm a big fan of renewables but my strong opinion is that the first step is in building an energy efficient home envelope and low consumption systems before adding renewables. It's the best way to get what you really want out of your project. Usually folks strongly believe that they do have an efficient envelope, but when compared to state of the art standards like the PassiveHaus standard, the improvement is usually minor and incremental. It's way cheaper to lower demand vs add expensive renewables. Get the consumption down to 10% of an average home and reduce your renewable generation components to 10% also.

I find this VERY interesting and fascinating, the Sterling and Family making the move to an alternative living situation.
Many details to figure out and will unfold eventually, just keep on keeping on and making the entire experience a learning/enjoyable one!

This will be a wonderful resource to follow, getting knowledgeable input from experienced industry individuals, seeing the trial-N-error / real-world look at how this is REALLY done.

It would be great Sterling, if you made a listing (read side link on blog) regarding all the resources (books, guides, sizing methods, forums, etc) that you have been (or will begin) utilizing for this endeavor. - There are many that look, but probably dont express how great this is and would love to do this on their own as well.
